At the beginning of August, Debs and I rode from Prague to south-eastern
Poland and the town of Oswiciem, known outside Poland as Auschwitz . This
picture is of our trusty steed at the gates of the Nazi death camp at
Birkenau, about a kilometre from Auschwitz. Many will recognise this gate
from the film "Schindler's List" - this is the entrance to the gigantic camp
through which the cattle trucks passed literally delivering millions of
people to "the end of the line". The remains of the gas chambers and
crematoria are sickening reminders of the madness of the "ethnic cleansing"
that Europe is still experiencing to this day. It is a sinister, chilling
and macabre place to visit - and that's how it felt in summer. In winter it
must be an absolute hell. Auschwitz/Birkenau is about 750 km from Prague,
and the ride takes between 6 and 8 hours in summer. In winter, take a car
and add 3 to 4 hours to that. The country-side is magnificent, and well
worth a visit - the back roads offer excellent, traffic-free riding. If
anyone is interested, I plotted the route on my GPS, and will be more than
happy to share latitudes and longitudes with anyone who is interested.
